Tapographic Delay

4ms

Complex multi-tap delay in Eurorack format with velocity-sensitive force sensor for tapping delay configurations (tapographies). Up to 32 taps, each with its own delay time, amplitude/filter, and panning. Features morphing between configurations, two feedback paths, 24 saveable tapographies, a tapography sequencer, and external clock sync. Mono-in, stereo-out. Designed by Matthias Puech and 4ms Company.168

Capabilities 3

Clock Syncclock-sync
Ext Clock jack syncs tapography length to external clock when Sync is engaged; Time knob selects multiplication/division ratio from 1/8 to 16.168
Multi-Tap Delaymulti-tap-delay
Tapographic Delay implements multi-tap delay with up to 32 taps, each independently configured with delay time, amplitude/filter (AMP/LPF/RES), and panning. Maximum delay of 174 seconds.168
Trigger Sequencertrigger-sequencer
The Gate Out jack emits the current tapography's tap pattern as a loop of triggers, functioning as a recordable trigger sequencer.168

Jacks 12 — 9 in / 3 out

NameSignalVoltageDescription
Inputs (9)
Audio Inaudio-11V to 11VMono audio input. Accepts full range of modular level signals up to +/-11V (22Vpp maximum).168
Dry/Wet CVcv-5V to 5V168
Ext Clockclock2V to 12VClock input: when Sync is engaged, syncs the tapography length to this clock, multiplied or divided by the Time knob setting.168
Feedback CVcv-5V to 5V168
Modulation CVcv-5V to 5V168
RepeattriggerTrigger input that toggles the Repeat function when a trigger is received.168
Tap/Nexttrigger2V to 12VTrigger input: simulates tapping the sensor with velocity from the Velocity/Morph CV jack. In SEQ mode, advances to the next tapography slot.168
Time CVcv-5V to 5V168
Velocity/Morphcv0V to 8VCV input sampled on each trigger at Tap/Next. Sets velocity (0–8V). Tracks 1V/Oct in RES and LPF modes. In SEQ mode, controls morph transition time (higher voltage = slower transition).168
Outputs (3)
Audio Out 1audioLeft stereo audio output. In SUM/R panning mode, outputs the sum of left and right taps (main mono output).168
Audio Out 2audioRight stereo audio output. In SUM/R panning mode, outputs only the Repeat tap at unity gain without filtering.168
Gate Outtrigger≤8VEmits a trigger pattern in a loop matching the current tapography rhythm. +8V pulses with 4ms pulse width. Can be used as a recordable trigger sequencer output.168

Parameters 17

NameTypeRangeBehavior
ADD/OFF/INSswitchThree-position switch. ADD appends new taps after the tapography end; INS inserts new taps within the existing tapography length; OFF disables tap input. In SEQ mode: OFF=forward sequencing, ADD=random slot, INS=random walk.168
BANKmenu_settingSelects the active bank (A, B, C, or D) for loading and saving tapographies. Each bank has 6 slots. Bank D is empty at factory.168
Delete/SyncbuttonShort press deletes the last entered tap (subject to Morph time). Long press toggles Sync mode (syncing tapography length to Ext Clock). Flashes white on each Gate Out trigger; red when Sync is active.168
Dry/WetknobCrossfades between the unaffected (dry) input signal and the sum of all taps (wet signal).168
Feedbackknob0% – 120%Injects the sum of all taps back into the delay input. Can build up to self-oscillation. A soft saturation is applied to the output and feedback path for analog-like clipping.168
Levelknob0% – 300%Sets the level of the signal going into the delay (wet path only; does not affect the dry path). 0% is silence into the delay, 300% is maximum amplification.168
MODEmenu_settingSelects between EDIT mode (create/modify tapographies) and SEQ mode (sequence between saved tapographies using the sensor or trigger input). Default is EDIT.168
ModulationknobControls amount and frequency of independent random sine-like LFOs on each tap time. Fully CCW: high frequency (~50Hz) but negligible amount. Fully CW: maximum amount (+/-0.5 sec) but LFOs are nearly stalled. Intermediate positions give useful wow-and-flutter modulation.168
Morphknob0s – 12sSets transition time (0 to ~12 seconds) when a tapography changes: adding/removing taps, clearing, enabling/disabling Repeat, or recalling a saved slot. Also controls morph speed in SEQ mode.168
PANmenu_settingSets stereo panning mode. ALT: alternates left/right per tap. RND: random panning from 100% left to 100% right. SUM/R: mono mode — Out 1 is sum of all taps, Out 2 is Repeat tap only.168
RES/AMP/LPFswitchSelects the velocity-to-parameter mapping for newly entered taps. RES: resonant band-pass filter, velocity controls center frequency. AMP: velocity controls volume. LPF: non-resonant low-pass filter, velocity controls roll-off frequency.168
Repeat/ClearbuttonShort press toggles Repeat (feeds last tap back at unity gain indefinitely, loop size fixed). Hold 0.5s clears all taps. Both subject to Morph time.168
Tap Buttons 1 to 6buttonLoad and save tapographies within the current bank. Also used to navigate and change settings in the settings menu.168
Tap sensorbuttonVelocity-sensitive force-sensing resistor (FSR). Entering taps in EDIT mode adds taps at the tapped rhythm with velocity proportional to tap force. In SEQ mode, advances to the next tapography slot, with harder taps causing faster morphing.168
Timeknob0.1 – 4Scales all tap times by a factor from about 0.1 to 4 (middle = 1). Compresses or expands the tapography in time; causes pitch shifting while moving. When Sync is engaged, selects clock multiplication/division (1/8 to 16).168
VELmenu_settingSets velocity sensitivity. For LPF and AMP taps: at MIN, amplitude/roll-off fully depends on velocity; at MAX, always maximum (no roll-off). For RES taps: sets Q from 1 to 20, MIN=less resonant, MAX=more resonant.168
VEL NORM jumperjumperSets the normalization of Velocity/Morph input when no cable is plugged in. HIGH: normalled to maximum velocity. TAP: normalled to the Tap/Next input amplitude, allowing trigger amplitude to set tap velocity.168
