Chaos

CLANK

Chaos is a six-channel aleatoric brain featuring a tunable random generator, per-channel looping (up to 32 steps), and a step sequencer mode. Each channel has an independent gate output (with probability, width, ratcheting, swing, and time control) and a CV output (with voltage window, ground transpose, quantization, slew, and external CV sampling). A master clock runs from 10 ms to 10 s; external clock sync is supported. Ten preset slots store full channel state; a Chaos function randomizes parameters within a user-defined entropy range.199

Capabilities 5

Aleatoric Sequenceraleatoric-sequencer
Six-channel aleatoric brain with random gate and CV generation per channel. Parameters (probability, width, ratcheting, swing, time, voltage window, ground transpose, quantization, slew) shape random output. Chaos function randomizes parameters within entropy bounds. Looping freezes last 1–32 steps.199
CV Recordercv-recorder

Clock Sourceclock-source
Internal master clock with 10ms–10s range on a dedicated Clock out jack; can be clocked externally via Clock in. Channel 1 acts as master clock when no external clock is present; each of the six channels can be independently synced or unsynced.199
Quantizerquantizer
Per-channel quantization to one of 24 scales (10 basic, 7 melodic major modes, 7 melodic minor modes). Root note adjustable by semitone. Works on both random and externally sampled voltages.199
Step Sequencerstep-sequencer
Available from firmware 1.17. Entered by looping a channel then pressing the encoder. Each of up to 32 steps can have independent note, probability, width, ratcheting, swing, slew, slew amount, and note deviation.199

NameSignalVoltageDescription
Inputs (4)
CV incv0V to 8VExternal CV input used for voltage mirroring (sample and hold), CV transpose of ground, or saved slot recall via voltage.199
Chaos ingateGate/trigger input that activates the Chaos randomization function on all linked channels each time a gate is received.199
Clock ingate199
Loop ingate0V to 10V199
Outputs (3)
Ch. CV outs 1-6cv0V to 8VSix random voltage outputs, one per channel. Default output is 0–8V random; can be windowed, transposed, quantized, slewed, or driven from external CV.199
Ch. Gate outs 1-6gate0V to 8V199
Clock outclock≤8V199

Parameters 11

NameTypeRangeBehavior
Entropymenu_settingSets the percentage of how much a parameter value can deviate from its current value when the Chaos function fires. Can be set independently per channel or per modifier. A modifier's individual entropy overrides the channel entropy when set.199
Ground TransposebuttonShifts the lower voltage limit of the random generator window. Each encoder step raises the floor. When quantized, each step moves to the next note in the selected scale. Can also be controlled via CV IN.199
Loop Lengthbutton1step – 32stepSets the number of steps in the loop (1–32). Chaos always keeps the last 32 steps memorized. Loop direction can be reversed. In sequencer edit mode, increasing length clones the last step; decreasing erases steps.199
Probabilitybutton0% – 100%Acts as a coin toss per gate event; lower values reduce chance of gate firing. If channel 1 is master clock, probability affects its gate output but not the master clock data stream. In sequencer mode, setting to 0% adds a pause to that step.199
QuantizationbuttonQuantizes per-channel CV output to one of 24 scales across three sets: 10 basic scales, 7 modes of the melodic major scale, and 7 modes of the melodic minor scale. Default is Unquantized. Root note is adjustable by semitone.199
Ratchetingbutton1 – 8Second function of the Width button. Multiplies the number of gates emitted per step; gate width is also halved for each ratchet division. Range is 1:1 to 8:1.199
Slewbutton0% – 100%Adjustable slew limiting on the CV output. Amount expressed as a percentage of the step duration; at 100% the CV uses the entire step length to reach the new voltage. Not available when using CV IN Sample & Hold mode.199
SwingbuttonSecond function of the Time button (tap and hold). Delays the channel by 0, 1/4, 2/4, or 3/4 of its clock rate to create upbeat effects.199
Timebutton10ms – 10000msWhen synced, sets a multiplication or division of the master clock (1–8, 16–32 in both directions). When unsynced or channel is master, sets milliseconds between gates (10ms–10s); default 500ms (120BPM). Also has tap-tempo function when unsynced. Swing is a secondary function accessed by holding the Time button.199
Voltage WindowbuttonReduces the upper voltage limit from which the random generator picks new values. Value bar shows range in volts; flashing orange on the 8th LED indicates full range selected.199
Widthbutton1% – 100%199
