Capabilities

  • CV Sequencer (Chain) cv-sequencer
  • Cartesian Sequencer cartesian-sequencer
Three-channel, three-dimensional Cartesian sequencer. X and Y channels use Snake patterns through a 4x4 grid; C (Cartesian/Orange) channel uses X and Y clocks to move horizontally and vertically respectively on the same 4x4 grid. [38]
  • Quantizer quantizer
Each of the three channels (X, Y, C) has an independent onboard quantizer with user-definable scales from the 12-tone equal-tempered scale, and selectable octave range (1-4 octaves). [38]
  • Select Bus select-bus
René can be set to LEAD or FOLLOW on the Select Bus via GBL.BUS. As LEAD, it transmits state changes, multi-paste, mesh, and store commands. As FOLLOW, it mirrors state actions from a leading module. Compatible with Make Noise TEMPI and other Select Bus modules. [38]

Parameters (25)

NameTypeRangeMin FWBehavior
ACCESS menu_setting Per-channel page with 16 buttons corresponding to the 16 locations. If a Location is ON, René can visit it; if OFF, René skips it. Independent per channel (X, Y, C). The LATCH page can override ACCESS page programming. [38]
FUN menu_setting Per-channel function page with three rows of options: FUN.OP (Options), FUN.MOD (MOD Input behavior), FUN.CV (CV Input behavior). The C/Orange channel only has the top row; it inherits X-axis from X.FUN and Y-axis from Y.FUN. [38]
FUN.CV.ADD menu_setting CV input is added to the current location's value, then quantized if the quantizer is active. Not available for C/Orange channel. Mutually exclusive with FUN.CV.S&H. [38]
FUN.CV.LOC menu_setting Allows external CV to address the channel's location. CLK always increments the sequence start point. For X/Y, location follows the active Snake pattern. For C/Orange, each axis uses the corresponding CV input. CV.LOC scaling is absolute. The C channel range is 1/4 that of X and Y channels. [38]
FUN.CV.S&H menu_setting Same as FUN.CV.ADD but CV changes only occur on the rising edge of the MOD input (sample and hold). C/Orange not affected. S&H circuit holds indefinitely. Mutually exclusive with FUN.CV.ADD. [38]
FUN.CV.SNAKE menu_setting Allows external CV to select snake pattern. Attenuator sets range. Continuous control via CV, not stepped by clock. Has no effect on C/Orange channel. When turned off, the currently selected snake pattern remains. [38]
FUN.MOD.CLK menu_setting Combines CLK and MOD signals to drive the axis. CLK is read as variable-width gate; MOD is read as rising edge only (trigger). When MOD is unpatched, button acts as manual clock advance. [38]
FUN.MOD.RESET menu_setting Resets to the Access-Enabled Location closest to Location 1 on rising edge of MOD signal. For C/Orange, each axis receives reset from its named MOD input. When MOD is unpatched, button acts as manual reset. [38]
FUN.MOD.RUNSTP menu_setting Channel runs when MOD gate is high; stops when MOD gate is low with respect to CLK. Mutually exclusive with FUN.MOD.DIR. When MOD is unpatched, button acts as manual stop/start. [38]
FUN.OP.SCAN menu_setting Scans all sixteen knobs and writes their values onto the current Channel instantly. Useful for copying sequences or tuning all channels to the same set of notes. [38]
FUN.OP.SLEEP menu_setting Determines non-ACCESS location behavior. SLEEP OFF: René SEEKS, skipping past non-accessed locations. SLEEP ON: René SLEEPS, the CV sequence rests for one CLK at each non-ACCESS location; the CV sequence sleeps and the Gate sequence continues until an accessible location is found. [38]
FUN.OP.TRIG menu_setting OFF: Gate output matches the width of the clock at CLK IN. ON: Gate output is a short trigger-style gate. Clocks created by MOD input via FUN.MOD.CLK are always output as triggers. With firmware V133, gate-tie behavior is added: locations with both Gate and Glide enabled will keep the gate high until a non-Glide location is reached. [38]
GATE menu_setting Per-channel page where each of the 16 locations can be toggled to generate or suppress a gate. Gate width is set by FUN.OP.TRIG — either follows clock width or outputs a short trigger. The Cartesian channel outputs a gate whenever it reaches a Gate-enabled location from any direction. [38]
GBL.BUS menu_setting Sets Select Bus behavior. FREE: René ignores the Select Bus (default). LEAD: René transmits state changes, multi-paste, mesh, and store commands to following modules. FOLLOW: René follows state commands from a leading module. [38]
GBL.STORE menu_setting Initiates STORE, writing all States and current global settings to non-volatile memory. René stops sequencing during the store process (8-10 seconds). M-Paste and Latch settings are not stored. The active state at time of store is loaded on power-up. [38]
GBL.Z.RESET menu_setting When ON, state changes via Z-MOD also reset all three channels (X, Y, C) to the ACCESS-enabled location nearest to Location 1. Manual state selection on the State Select Page also triggers this reset when on. [38]
GL.Z.ON menu_setting When ON, Z-MOD and Z-CV are active and select States at all times (not just on the State Select Page). PGM pages can be edited while states are being sequenced. When OFF, Z-MOD and Z-CV only work on the State Select Page. [38]
GLIDE menu_setting Per-channel page. Enabling a location causes the CV output to glide (portamento) to that location's value. For X and Y channels, glide time is based on clock rate. For the Cartesian channel, glide time is a constant. [38]
LATCH menu_setting Entered by pressing the current channel's navigation button again from PGM pages. Enabled locations always play and generate CV and GATE outputs, overriding ACCESS and GATE page programming. When nothing is selected, reverts to ACCESS and GATE settings. Non-destructive; Latch is not stored and does not alter Program Pages in the selected State. [38]
M-Paste menu_setting Accessed via X/Red button in State Pages. Allows MESH programming (changes in one state propagate to all enabled states) and Multi-Paste (copies current state to multiple enabled states). Hold X/Red to perform Multi-Paste. [38]
QUANT menu_setting Per-channel quantizer page. Bottom three rows select individual notes from the 12-tone equal-tempered scale. Top row sets octave range: location 13=1 octave, 14=2 octaves, 15=3 octaves, 16=4 octaves. With no octave range selected, quantization is disabled and maximum output range/resolution is used. [38]
SNAKE menu_setting X/Red and Y/Green channels each have a SNAKE page. The 16 buttons select one of 16 different paths through the grid. CV inputs can be programmed to select snake patterns via FUN.CV.SNAKE. The C/Orange channel does not have a SNAKE page. [38]
Select STATE menu_setting State page accessed via Y/Green button in State Pages. Used to select and enable/disable any of 64 STATEs stored in 4 banks of 16. Z-MOD increments through enabled states; Z-CV addresses them by voltage. Touching an enabled location immediately switches to that state. Press Y again to toggle Bank view. [38]
X-CV Combo Pot knob Input attenuator for X-CV with 5V normalization. When nothing is patched, acts as a panel control normalled to 5V. [38]
Y-CV Combo Pot knob Input attenuator for Y-CV with 5V normalization. When nothing is patched, acts as a panel control normalled to 5V. [38]

Firmware history (1 versions)

VersionReleasedNotes
133 Adds gate tie functionality to FUN.OP.TRIG: locations with both Gate and Glide enabled keep the gate output high until a non-Glide location is reached, enabling variable-length note events (ties and slurs). Also includes bug fixes. [38]
